GENERAL NOTICE NO.
G-1876
MBTA CharlieCard and Public Transit Discount
The Division of Insurance has issued Bulletin 2007-03 (http://www.mass.gov/Eoca/docs/doi/Bulletins/bulletins_07_03.pdf) instructing insurance companies and agents on changes to the evidence of purchase that a policyholder is required to provide the insurer in order to receive the Public Transit Discount.
Companies must accept CharlieTickets, and receipts issued by the MBTA for monthly plastic CharlieCard purchases, as evidence of purchase required by the Public Transit Discount. The MBTA is developing a CharlieCard registration system which will be used to verify purchases, but until this system is in place, CharlieCard receipts and Charlie Tickets will satisfy the verification requirement.
Rule 19, Discounts, will be revised in the future to reflect this change.
Contact the Division of Insurance Consumer Services Section at (617)521-7794 for questions regarding the effect of the CharlieCard on the Public Transit Discount. Questions regarding this Notice may also be sent to adempsey@aib.org.
